Science Fiction Story (Dr. EZ's Jet Skis): Sample #1

Introduction

As many of you know, I am writing a set of science fiction stories targeted toward teenagers. (Approximate age: 10-16). The story is titled “Dr. EZ’s Special Jet Skis”. There will be several books (and movies) in this series.  Below is one short sample of the writing.

Premise of the Stories

The McCallister kids are on summer break when the encounter Dr. EZ at his Jet Ski rental shop.  Dr. EZ, in turn, is looking for those special customers that he can take on marvelous Special Tours.

Dr. EZ invites the kids to follow him on journeys - which can only be accessed through his specially designed Jet Skis. Thus, the series of adventures begin.

Note that the story is character based. The kids are a family, each with their own personalities and interests. The good Dr. EZ is the one who leads and guides them, yet each child interacts with the environment and moves the story along in his/her own way.

Regarding the science: the majority of the science is accurate. The technologies are mostly accurate as well. There are only a few minor details which are fictionalized, to help the story progress more easily.

What is most unique for the stories is that the children actually experience scientific processes, and see the wonders of the universe, in ways that we normally cannot do.

For example, the children will travel inside of an atom. They will ride on top of a photon. They will be bustled about by electric and magnetic fields.  They will tour deep caverns beneath the earth.

And in all of these adventures, they will experience first-hand what it is really like.

Excerpt from the Book: “Dr. EZ’s Special Jet Skis”

Below is one short sample of the writing:

Dr. Zephon led Victoria to a steel door on the right. Victoria began to wonder what she was getting herself into.

They walked inside the storage room. It was extremely cold.
“What the heck?!” asked Victoria. “It is freaking cold in here!!”
“It should be. This room is kept at a constant 43 degrees.”
“Forty-three” she said sarcastically. “Not forty-two or forty-one?”
Oblivious to the sarcasm, Dr. Zephon answered: “Those temperatures are acceptable. But no lower than 38.5.”
Victoria rubbed her arms to keep warm. She repeated some of his words, not really paying attention to him. “38.5 degrees. Sure.”

Dr. Zephon searched through all the garments hanging on the rack to the right. Not finding what he wanted, Dr. Zephon turned to the shelves in the back and started digging.
“These outfits contain special materials” added Dr. Zephon, still searching for something he could not find. “They are constructed as several micro-thin layers. The whole thing is best preserved at the optimum temperature of 43 degrees.”
Victoria rolled her eyes and thought to herself: “I don’t care what the number is, or why it is, all I know is that it is freaking cold in here, and I am not dressed for this!”

While Dr. Zephon was digging in the back, Victoria decided to look through the garments hanging on the right. They looked very much like the wetsuits worn by surfers and scuba divers.
“I’ve seen wetsuits like these in local stores” she said to Dr. Zephon. “I don’t see anything special about them. And I have never known the shops to keep their wetsuits at 40 degrees.”
“Forty-three degrees” reminded Dr. Zephon. “That is because these are not wetsuits. They are ambient-energy suits. They contain thin layers of Anachrocyclene, which is best kept at cool temperatures until ready for use.”
Victoria wanted to know about Anachrocyclene…but at the moment she wanted to get out of this freezing closet more than anything else.
